comprehensive study of retirement facilities was conducted throughout several states. Based on personal visits to assisted living facilities, information was compiled and an extensive survey was prepared and mailed to more than five thousand Manatee County senior citizens to determine their needs and desires. The overwhelming response revealed a strong desire for elegant as well as comfortable surroundings in a residential setting. With these goals in mind, Summerfield became a reality.

1989, Manatee County selected Summerfield for two "Awards of Excellence". The first was awarded for site planning that preserved the land's natural beauty and the second for excellent design and construction. In 1997 the "Reader's Preference Award" voted Summerfield the best retirement community.
